On the 16th Of July, 2022, the Independence Amatuer Radio Club successfully launched a weather balloon from Riverside Park here in Independence, Kansas which reached an altitude of over 104,000 feet where it was tracked using APRS. Also, as part of the payload, an onboard Crossband Repeater Radio, to allow communication between both the ground team and to also receive signal reports from other radio operators within a four state radius. Once the balloon had reached it's maximum altitude, the balloon burst thus releasing the radio payload where at a predetermined altitude an onboard parachute deployed allowing the payload it to safely land in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, where the chase team recovered it.
